[700km Ridden] ICAN FL52 Max: The Impact of "Chinese Premium" That Defies Convention, and the Latest 2nd Generation.

by nicole hu 25 Mar 2026 0 Comments

When upgrading a road bike, the component that most dramatically and cruelly changes the ride quality is the "wheelset."

This time, I put the flagship **"FL52 Max"** from Shenzhen powerhouse ICAN through rigorous testing for over a month, covering more than 700km.

In the past, the term "Chinese carbon" carried an image of cheapness and low quality. However, after thoroughly using the FL52 Max, my conclusion is this: "This represents a new frontier: 'Chinese Premium,' capable of directly competing with world-renowned brands."

Moreover, news has arrived that this masterpiece has already evolved into its **second generation (Gen 2)**. Let's thoroughly dissect its full scope.

1. The Shock of the Specs: The "Contradiction" of 1,400g at 52mm Depth

First, take a look at the figures for the FL52 Max that I tested. Experienced cyclists will undoubtedly raise an eyebrow at these specs alone.

  • Rim Depth: 52mm (Serious Aero)

  • Weight: Actual 1,400g (including rim tape)

  • Spokes: Sapim CX-Ray (synonym for reliability)

  • Design: Versatile "Hooked"

At 52mm deep, these rims weigh under 1,400g, approaching the weight of climbing-specific wheels. This combination of "lightness" and "aerodynamics" is the true essence of the Max series.

2. [Breaking News] Dramatic Evolution to the 2nd Generation (FL50 II)

The frightening aspect of ICAN is its development speed. The already complete FL52 Max has now reached even greater heights.

Core Updates

  1. Further Weight Reduction: The astonishing 1,400g figure has been further trimmed down.

  2. Increased Internal Rim Width (21mm → 23mm): This is the biggest topic. The profile when mounting 28c or wider tires has been optimized, achieving the optimal solution for modern road racing: **"low pressure, high grip, low resistance."**

3. Ride Impression: The Truth Behind Unexpected "Stiffness"

The moment I pushed the pedals, my expectations were pleasantly defied.

Overwhelming Responsiveness and Acceleration

Because they use lightweight CX-Ray spokes, I initially imagined a "mild ride." However, in reality, they are surprisingly stiff and sharply responsive.

When accelerating while dancing, there is no sensation of power being absorbed by flex. The lateral stiffness of the rear wheel, in particular, is immense, with energy directly kicking off the road surface. The high quality as a racing component, approaching that of the legendary Campagnolo Bora which I once loved, brought a smile to my face.

Why is it so stiff? The secret lies in the "high-quality rim" made with uncompromising carbon layups. Comfort is left to the tires, while the rim focuses solely on stiffness. This unyielding design philosophy generates overwhelming propulsion.

4. Aerodynamic Performance: A "Different World" from 35km/h

The benefits of the 52mm depth reveal themselves at high speeds.

While aerodynamic effects are said to begin from 18km/h, the true pleasure of "cutting through the wind" kicks in after 35km/h. During testing, there was a section where I maintained speeds close to 50km/h, and I felt the wheels, with inertia on their side, continuously pushing me forward.

For criteriums and flat races, there is no more reliable weapon.

5. Practical Considerations for Use

Crosswinds and Handling

Due to their 52mm height, they are naturally sensitive to crosswinds. When descending in strong winds, a certain level of skill is required to maintain control of the handlebars. This can be considered a characteristic unique to pure racing equipment, exchanged for "speed."

Finish Quality

The rim decals are extremely robust and show no signs of peeling even after cleaning with strong chemicals. The bearings are so smooth that mechanics with over 20 years of experience rave about them. The only minor issue was some inconsistency in the included rim tape, which can be easily resolved by replacing it with something like DT Swiss tape.

6. Overall Assessment: Is This Wheel Worth Buying?

The ICAN FL52 Max is the **"final destination"** for cyclists who demand the following:

  • No compromise on either "lightness" or "aerodynamics."

  • Overwhelming stiffness and responsiveness needed to win races.

  • Performance equivalent to a 500,000 yen brand-name product at a realistic price.

The latest 2nd generation FL50 II even features a modern update to a 23mm internal width. It's no longer about "choosing it because it's good value," but rather, "pure performance led me to ICAN." That's the level of perfection you can proudly declare.

This wheelset will undoubtedly be a true partner that pushes your limits and takes you to unknown speeds.
