ICAN FL50 Max In-depth Review: "Reasonable Carbon Wheels" in an Era of Soaring Prices
Hello cycling enthusiasts, Davide Petrini here.
Today, I'm going to delve into the hottest topic in the road bike world right now: the soaring prices of high-end parts and the realistic and smart alternatives to them.
In recent years, the prices of carbon frames and deep-dish wheels have significantly increased. The more you pursue lightness, rigidity, and aerodynamic performance, the more products from European brands tend to fall into the 1,500-2,000 euro range. Their performance is certainly excellent, but not all cyclists can afford such prices.
In this situation, a Chinese carbon brand called
ICAN Cycling has rapidly gained prominence.
Today, I'll be reviewing their flagship model,
the ICAN FL50 Max.
Who is ICAN?
ICAN was founded in 2009 in Shenzhen, China.
The founder, an engineer and cyclist, established the company with the philosophy of "providing high-quality carbon products at a fair price," leveraging his experience in carbon manufacturing.
ICAN's characteristic is a brand that competes on specifications and price competitiveness rather than flashy marketing.
Technical Specs
The main specifications of the FL50 Max are as follows:
-
Rim Height: 50mm
A versatile range offering a good balance of flat-road cruising and climbing performance. -
Rim Width: 23mm inner / 27mm outer
Compatible with modern wide-tire trends. -
Spokes: 24 carbon aero spokes (front and rear)
The use of carbon spokes at this price point is noteworthy. -
Material: Toray T700 + T800
Optimized balance of lightness and rigidity.
Measured Weight
Results from digital scale measurement:
-
Front: 645g
-
Rear: 795g (including Shimano/SRAM freebody)
-
Front and Rear Set: Approx. 1,440g
This is a very light weight for a 50mm deep rim.
It's a figure that suggests excellent climbing performance.
Riding Impressions
Crosswind Stability
While 50mm deep rims tend to be susceptible to crosswinds, the FL50 Max exhibits high stability. There was no excessive pulling on the handlebars even in strong gusts, and control was good.
Climbing Performance
The responsiveness, typical of lightweight wheels, was impressive.
Acceleration was sharp the moment I pushed down, and there was little loss of speed even when out of the saddle. It moved nimbly even when cruising uphill at around 20km/h.
The rigidity and rebound characteristics of the carbon spokes were clearly felt.
Price and Market Comparison
The price is 799 dollars (approx. 750 euros).
If you look for equivalent specifications (Toray T700/T800, carbon spokes, approx. 1,440g, 50mm height) from a European brand, the price would almost double in reality.
It can be said that ICAN reduces brand premium and focuses pricing purely on performance.
Now Evolved to FL50 II
Please note that this review is based on measured data for the FL50 Max, but it has now been upgraded to the successor model,
the ICAN FL50 II.
The FL50 II features:
-
Optimized carbon layup
-
Improved internal hub structure
-
Further weight reduction
-
Improved rigidity balance
In other words, it has further evolved based on this evaluation.
Conclusion: A Rational Choice
My conclusion is clear:
The FL50 Max is a wheel with an excellent "price-to-performance ratio." And now, the even lighter FL50 II is available.
-
Lightweight
-
High rigidity
-
Good crosswind stability
-
Carbon spokes used
-
2-year warranty
-
Realistic price
In a market where prices continue to soar, ICAN is not just a "low-price brand."
It's one of the rational upgrade strategies.
For cyclists who prioritize pure performance over brand name, it's a strong contender.
Please share your thoughts as well.
Are you already using ICAN?
Happy training! 🚴
