ICAN FL50 MAX Review – Dave Noakes on "True Speed, Not Just a Logo" –

by nicole hu 13 Jan 2026 0 Comments

If you ride a road bike, you've probably thought this at least once:
"I wish I could ride a little easier, a little faster..."

This is often called "free speed."
Even with the same leg strength, simply switching to wheels with high aerodynamic performance can increase cruising speed and reduce fatigue on long rides. It's now common knowledge that wheels significantly impact your ride.

However, the reality is quite severe.

ENVE, ZIPP, ROVAL, CADEX—
Top-brand carbon wheels typically cost 270,000 to 399,999 yen per set.
While their performance is undoubtedly superior,
"Is that price difference really necessary?"
Many cyclists feel this way.

The ICAN FL MAX series directly challenges this "too-high barrier."

This time, we introduce a practical review of the ICAN FL50 MAX by British cycling YouTuber Dave Noakes.

The price is $919 (approximately 110,000 yen).
Just looking at this number, you might think of it as a "cost-effective wheel."
However, once you look at the details, this impression is pleasantly subverted.

To put it simply, the FL MAX is not a wheel you choose because it's cheap, but one that makes choosing expensive wheels unnecessary.

Is the weight accurate? — Manufacturing quality indicated by spec precision

For direct-to-consumer carbon wheels, many people's first concern is weight.

The catalog says it's light.
But when you actually weigh it, it's somehow heavier.
Many of you have probably experienced this "common issue."

The weight of the FL50 MAX published by ICAN is as follows:

  • Front: 645g

  • Rear: 750g

  • Total: 1,395g

Dave Noakes' actual measurements were as follows:

"The front was 10g lighter than claimed, and the rear was exactly as claimed."

This is by no means a minor detail.
From a manufacturing perspective, staying within ±10g is proof of a very high level of quality control.

With inexpensive wheels,
• Resin accumulates locally
• Carbon layup varies significantly between individual units

Such reasons tend to lead to weight variations.

In the case of FL MAX, there is almost no "unevenness."
This is highly valuable not just for being light, but for its stable construction.

"Cheap ≠ Entry-level." The internals are completely high-end.

One of the major features of the FL MAX series is that the price does not change based on rim depth.

  • 38mm

  • 40mm

  • 50mm

  • 52mm

The price is the same no matter which you choose.

While many brands implement "height-based pricing" where "deeper means more expensive," this is extremely rare and an honest pricing strategy.

Furthermore, looking at the component configuration, it becomes clear that the "reason for the lower price" is not a compromise.

■ SAPIM CX-RAY Spokes

A classic, widely used spoke known for its excellent balance of aerodynamic performance, lightness, and durability.
It is a highly reliable spoke adopted by many high-end wheels.

■ DT Swiss-style Ratchet Mechanism

Instead of a conventional pawl-type freehub,
it employs a ratchet mechanism where all teeth engage simultaneously.

  • Smooth torque transfer

  • Load distributed for high durability

  • Solid and reliable engagement

Dave also commented, "The sound and feel are clearly superior."

Given all this, it's clear that the FL MAX is not a wheel where
"the specifications are merely adequate because it's cheap."

Different internal widths front and rear — A design philosophy balancing aerodynamics and comfort

The FL MAX rim design is very modern.

  • Front: 21mm internal width

  • Rear: 23mm internal width

  • External width: 27.3mm (same for front and rear)

This asymmetric front and rear internal width design has a clear purpose.

The front wheel is the most affected part by air resistance.
A 21mm internal width is a design that adheres to the "105% rule," maximizing aerodynamic performance.

On the other hand, for the rear,
• Road-following ability
• Comfort
• Traction

are important, so a 23mm internal width ensures air volume.

Dave uses 30mm tires, and he praises the excellent fit with the rim, feeling confident even with tubeless setups.

This design likely contributes to achieving a balance that is "not too stiff, yet supple," even when combined with race-oriented aluminum frames or stiff carbon frames.

How is the biggest concern for direct brands being addressed?

When considering overseas direct-to-consumer brands, Japanese users share common concerns.

  • Are initial defects okay?

  • Can I get support?

  • Is it safe to use for a long time?

ICAN has properly addressed these points as well.

  • Includes a factory QC checklist with shipment

  • Rim tape and valves pre-installed, ready to use upon arrival

  • 2-year product warranty

Dave also commented in the video:

"Having a 2-year warranty shows confidence in the product.
It means they meticulously craft each and every one."

The fact that it dispels the concern of "weak warranty because it's cheap" is another big appeal of the FL MAX.

No compromises on aesthetics. A finish that satisfies ownership.

With lower-priced wheels,
aesthetics tend to be an afterthought.

But the FL MAX is different.

The carbon surface is uniformly beautiful,
and the iridescent decals change their appearance depending on the angle of light.

When combined with oil-slick valve caps or bottle cages,
the overall impression of the complete bike is significantly enhanced.
It's a finish that evokes the "joy of ownership."

Overall Evaluation: Is that logo really worth 200,000 yen?

Performance, weight, components, finish.
From every perspective, the ICAN FL MAX possesses a level of completion that can directly compare with high-end wheels.

Yet, the price is less than half.

This makes one wonder.

If

  • the riding experience is the same

  • the weight is comparable, or even lighter

  • reliability and warranty are sufficient

Then what are we paying for?

A brand logo?
Or the image that "expensive = reliable"?

If you

  • want to enjoy both racing and long rides

  • want to minimize unnecessary costs

  • truly want to choose based on performance

Then the FL MAX is a very rational choice.

FL50 Ⅱ

Addendum: The FL MAX has evolved even further

Currently, the FL40 MAX / FL50 MAX have been updated to a new generation model,
and are now available as the FL40 II / FL50 II.

  • Further weight reduction

  • Optimized rigidity balance

  • Refinements based on the latest trends

And for models in stock at our Japanese warehouse,
free shipping and customs duties are included, with delivery in as little as 1-2 days.

If you're unsure about your next wheel choice,
please seriously consider the ICAN FL series.

Don't compromise on price. Don't regret performance.
The answer is right here.
