What the specifications of various bicycle tires mean

by Aman Batra 16 Aug 2019 0 Comments

Most of you probably already know that there are different tire sizes for road bikes and gravel bikes. We have started researching wide tires that do not significantly reduce speed. They allow for higher speeds and increased comfort. The problem is how to find the right tires for your needs. Which tires will fit your wheel rims? What is the tire size? The sidewalls of tires often contain a lot of size information, which can be confusing. To help our customers, we have created a size chart.

Which tire size do you need?

If you prioritize comfort, the answer is simple. Installing larger tires improves ride comfort, but you need to check if they fit your wheel rims and if there's enough clearance between the frame and front fork. However, many manufacturers specify the maximum tire size compatible with their wheels.

Is there a tire size compatibility chart for road bikes?

Yes, there is. If you don't need to know anything else about tires, simply read our quick guide to tires compatible with your rims!

The table above shows the internal rim width and the tire sizes compatible with those rims. If you want to use tires in the red box, there is a risk involved with using unsuitable tires.

Try to avoid it. As you can see, rims are compatible with various tire sizes, and it's worth choosing rims that suit your riding style. Currently, to fit modern riding styles, we use lightweight aero wheels with an internal width of 18.25mm.

 What is ETRTO?

サイズ

Do you know that manufacturers love new standards? The idea was given to us by the bike industry every week during that period. Fortunately, we have moved away from that. But does this need to be with ETRTO? Countries have their own ways of measuring tires. All those standards were a nightmare for consumers. They decided to make everything simple and create a worldwide standard guide for tire sizes. That new method is called the E.T.R.T.O system, which you may have seen. It stands for the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation. That organization was adopted as part of ISO. It standardized as a global organization. The specific name given to the ETRTO standard is ISO5775. It's very easy because you don't need to navigate through six different 26-inch tire sizes that were previously used.

What tire size markings does ETRTO provide?

The ISO/ETRTO standard system uses two numbers. First, how wide the tire inflates. This guide also applies to most manufacturers. Different rims affect this width. Your rim can change the shape of your tire, and you can see the recommended size in the next guide.

Second, wheel, tire, and rim sizes confuse people. The reason for the confusion is that these numbers are not the wheel and tire numerical values that most people use in daily conversation. If your wheel is 622mm under the ETRTO organization, called 700c, you can appropriately use the French system. 622 is the same as a 29er mountain bike. Mountain bikes are generally expressed in "inches." With exceptions, the new standard is 27.5. It is sometimes described in the French system as 650b. As you know, there are also 650a and 650c. Under ETRTO, it is 584mm. 650 tires without letters are narrower, and moving up the letters, the tires become wider in the French system. The French system measures the outer diameter of the tire to determine the size. The ISO/ETRTO system measures the inner diameter. The inch system is less specific than ETRTO or the French system and is therefore less suitable for measurement.

So, if you are looking for 622x35mm, there seems to be more variety in gravel or cyclocross than in road bikes. It is very easy to buy tubes with the ETRTO number on them. You won't buy the wrong tube.

Which tire sizes are compatible with ICAN FL and AERO RIMS?

ホイールサイズ

Our aero wheels and fast and light wheels have aerodynamically shaped rims.

The only difference is that the Aero range uses Toray T700 and T800 carbon fiber in its construction. The carbon fiber blend makes the Aero wheelset about 100g lighter than the Fast and Light wheels. Both rims also feature an internal width of 18.25mm. This allows for tire widths ranging from 25mm to approximately 40mm. The 25mm width is popular among modern road racers. It fits the rim perfectly, reducing drag at the tire-rim interface and providing free speed. The 40mm width is sufficient for the majority of gravel riders. If you ride more off-road and want something wider than 40mm, 29er XC wheels might be a better option. Between these sizes, you can use UCI maximum width cyclocross tires. These 33mm wide tires can be easily mounted on AERO and FL RIMS.

By the way, are you ready for tubeless?!
