Electric-Assist Bicycles: City Bike Edition

by nicole hu 08 Mar 2021 0 Comments

Electric assist bicycles are selling well.

Popular models can even be difficult to obtain.

Social factors such as changes in living, commuting, and school environments during the COVID-19 pandemic are likely at play, but it is also probably due to the fact that many people have started to realize the benefits of electric assist bicycles.

This time, we will look at electric assist bicycles in general, and specifically the city cycle type.

1. Reasons to choose an electric assist bicycle

While there are many possible reasons, most can be summarized as follows:

① I want an easy-to-ride bicycle.

② I use it for commuting, so I don't want to waste unnecessary energy.

③ I carry my child, so assistance is a must.

④ There are many hills, so assistance is helpful.

⑤ I don't have much stamina, so I want assistance for long-distance touring.

As you can see, there are various reasons why people need electric assist bicycles.

And the market offers a wide range of types, from city riding to touring.

2. Obtaining an electric assist bicycle

The popular manufacturers are Bridgestone, Yamaha, and Panasonic.

Even though electric assist bicycles in general continue to be in short supply, it seems safest to choose from these three manufacturers.

Let me explain why.

① Parts compatibility is ensured.

You can definitely secure parts for repairs.

You won't be unable to ride due to a lack of parts such as tires, batteries, or motors.

② High reliability of electrical systems

Some unknown manufacturers even pose a risk of fire.

Also, while electric assist methods are regulated by law,

those that do not comply are classified as mopeds and require registration.

③ Designed with domestic use in mind

Child seats, assist levels, anti-theft measures, etc.

   are all meticulously designed.

3. About batteries and assistance

You should thoroughly check the battery beforehand.

Although it depends on usage, the charging capacity generally decreases after about three years.

If you understand how much the cruising range will decrease at that point, you won't panic.

Regarding the cruising range, the manufacturer's published figures are based only on tests under certain conditions, and in reality, they vary depending on riding style, mode, terrain, number of charges, and so on.

Of course, with use, you will get a general idea of the cruising range, but it would be reassuring to do a test ride beforehand if possible.

Since the assist level differs between models, a simple comparison of battery capacity is not very meaningful. However, the travel distance is tested under almost the same conditions by each company, so it can be used for some comparison.

Are you familiar with "regenerative charging"?

Some models have a mechanism where applying the brakes also recharges the battery.

Especially on hills, this can provide a surprising amount of charge, which helps extend the cruising range.

However, the freewheeling sensation (the state where the bicycle continues to move by inertia even when you stop pedaling) that you feel on a regular bicycle is reduced, which can sometimes feel a bit odd.

Regarding motor assistance, it can be broadly divided into mild or strong "attack" type.

When a child is in a child seat, a mild assist is preferable, and prior confirmation is necessary.

In contrast, a strong assist allows for sporty riding.

This is suitable for those who want to actively enjoy an electric assist bicycle, such as experiencing powerful acceleration.

In any case, the amount and range of assist are determined by law, and the assist stops working when the speed exceeds about 20km/h.

Also, the maximum assist level (even with full assist) is not necessarily always achieved, and this leads to the perceived difference in power when comparing different models.

Whether it's mild or powerful, these are points that should be checked by test riding or by consulting a professional shop.

4. City cycle type electric assist bicycles

Here, we will discuss so-called "mamachari" (mama's chariots) and those with child seats.

Returning to the topic of shortages, unless you have strong preferences, for this type, it's best to prioritize models that are available in-store or in manufacturer's stock.

Differences in wheel size are also well-designed nowadays, and with small wheels up to about 20 inches, instability is rarely an issue.

Saddles are generally soft and prioritize cushioning, but even if you don't like it, you can easily replace it. Just changing from a black saddle to a brown or white one can give you a customized feel.

Child seats are also generally well-thought-out, but there are some differences between manufacturers,

so it's an item you should check beforehand to see if the usability suits you.

5. Summary

This time, we discussed electric assist bicycles in general and city cycles.

For your precious bicycle, we recommend storing it in a covered area if possible.

Even if it's exposed to rain, please cover it and take good care of it.
