For those interested in BMX

by nicole hu 15 Aug 2020 0 Comments

With BMX (Bicycle Motocross) park freestyle becoming an Olympic sport, attention on BMX has been growing. Here, we'll discuss the different types of BMX competitions, the corresponding differences in bike types, and how to ride. This is a serenade for those interested in BMX but unsure how to get started.

Types of BMX Competitions

BMX competitions are broadly divided into two categories: racing, which competes for speed, and freestyle (tricks), which competes for skill. Furthermore, freestyle is divided into park, street, and flatland.

Let's explain them in order.

① Racing

Racing became an official Olympic sport at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. It involves 4 to 8 riders simultaneously competing for the best time on an undulating 350m course. It is the bicycle version of motorcycle motocross, which is also the origin of the term BMX. The highlight is jumps up to 5m. It condenses fundamental cycling techniques, and many riders transition from here to other cycling disciplines.

② Park

Freestyle Park became an official sport at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In Japan, riders like Rimu Nakamura are active, making it arguably the most watched competition currently. This event involves competing in tricks performed during jumps and other maneuvers in a "park" equipped with various-shaped ramps. Similar events exist in skateboarding and skiing, but its exceptionally dynamic performances captivate audiences.

③ Street

Freestyle Street, as the name suggests, is a performance carried out in urban environments. It's not just about riding around; walls, fences, stairs, handrails – everything becomes a stage, where riders compete with complex jumps and other tricks. It started as a somewhat rebellious youth activity and competition, but events are also held in closed spaces, and its accessible yet powerful performances capture the hearts of fans.

④ Flatland

Freestyle Flatland competes with acrobatic tricks performed in a completely flat space, without using obstacles. The unexpectedness and beauty of balancing in complex postures and spinning are highlights. Since it can be performed in a small space, it's perfect for small city events, and its popularity is expected to grow even further in the future.

How to Choose and Buy a BMX

BMX bikes are subdivided into types suitable for each competition. It's probably best to consult a shop knowledgeable about BMX first. You'll likely gain not only advice on how and where to ride but also find fellow enthusiasts. Here's a table summarizing the specs for each type.

*A "peg" is a short cylindrical part attached to the front and rear axles.

Flatland pegs are primarily used for foot placement, so four knurled, non-slip pegs are used on all four axles. In contrast, other freestyle disciplines often use them for grinding on rails, so smooth, non-knurled pegs are used as needed. This table shows that bike equipment is broadly divided into two types: ① Racing/Freestyle/Street and ② Flatland. This is a natural result, as flatland is a static, balance-focused discipline rather than a dynamic one.

Thus, since bike design varies depending on the riding style, you first need to decide what style you want to ride. However, although not listed in the table above, there are also models specifically for city riding. Models priced at ¥45,000 or less can be considered for city riding. In other words, if you want to decide on a riding style and get serious, it's recommended to choose a model above ¥45,000. And importantly, choose a bike that fits your body size. It's not as strict as road bikes, so it should be relatively easy to choose.

Basic BMX Riding

To ride a BMX authentically, you'll want to master the following techniques.

The goal is to perform a bunny hop (jump). Fast learners might master it in a single day.

① Stand-up riding: Ride without sitting on the seat.

② Still stand: Balance with your feet on the pedals.

③ Lift the front wheel: Shift your weight while riding to jump the front wheel.

④ Lift the rear wheel: Similarly, jump the rear wheel.

⑤ Braking: Slide the rear wheel sideways while braking to stop.

⑥ Bunny hop: Jump the rear wheel immediately after jumping the front wheel.

For BMX riding techniques, please refer to video sites, as there are many videos available.

Summary

What did you think? You've probably realized that the real challenge with BMX begins after you buy it. Since the bikes are small and easy to handle, they are also excellent for practice. The techniques you acquire will be useful for any type of bike. It's often said that BMX and MTB riders don't fall, and having a complete grasp of basic weight transfer is a significant advantage. Don't you feel a fondness for BMX bikes, which are affordable and structurally simple?

ICAN offers high-performance wheels to enhance your BMX's capabilities.
