What Your Cycling Style Says About Your Personality

by nicole hu 22 Jul 2021 0 Comments

Don't you think that cycling, much like driving a car, reveals one's true personality?

This time, I'll explain the mechanism behind it and provide a simple personality diagnosis for you.

First, it's said that anonymity increases when cycling.

This is called the "Eichmann experiment."

People show their true colors when riding a bicycle.

Adolf Eichmann, whose name is associated with the murder of a large number of Jews during the Holocaust, was reportedly a diligent man who simply followed orders.

Normally, one would hesitate to press a button that would kill someone, but due to the anonymity of "just following orders," the button was pressed repeatedly without hesitation.

Similarly, it is said that when anonymity increases, people become more aggressive or their true nature emerges.

Come to think of it, conflicts are common on social media, and this is also said to be a manifestation of aggression due to anonymity.

Personality in driving

First, let's consider what it's like when you're driving alone.

If you drive aggressively, you have an "aggressive personality."

Even when hill climbing, you might push your way up, or when downhill, you might cut people off without considering those around you. You should notice if your driving is impolite.

Do you ever find yourself riding right behind a stranger in the city, almost tailgating them?

If you realize it but still find yourself doing it, the "aggression due to anonymity" mentioned above is manifesting.

If you often make sudden turns or sudden brakes while driving, you might have a "sloppy personality."

If you don't think things through carefully or anticipate what's ahead, you'll inevitably need to make sudden turns or brakes.

It can be said that you have a tendency to be sloppy.

Next, if you see someone cycling ahead of you while driving and often feel the urge to overtake them, or actually do so, you have a "competitive personality."

Even if there's no real need to overtake quickly, and you'll just catch up at the next traffic light anyway, you still push to get ahead.

Your competitive nature is showing.

Finally, if you drive cautiously, anticipating people or cars at intersections, or slowing down early for changing traffic lights, you could be described as "timid or neurotic."

Since this is safe driving, please continue as you are.

Personality that emerges during touring

When touring, you often find yourself more concerned with how others are riding than with your own ride, don't you?

During a tour, you almost always ride in a line.

If you ride in two lines, you'll take up more width, which is dangerous on roads where cars drive.

Also, the lead and tail positions each have their roles, and it's said that beginners are best in about the second position.

Despite this, some people drive freely, going to the front or back.

While there might be times when the line gets disordered and it can't be helped, if it's a regular occurrence, it could be said that they have a "lack of cooperativeness."

There are also leaders at the front who rush ahead even when the group is spread out, aren't there?

Their diligent personality, which prioritizes adhering to the schedule, means they lack consideration for others.

Such people might not be suited to being in the lead or a leader.

Some people also approach excessively close from behind.

While there's talk of reducing air resistance, if you're always sticking close to the person in front, even when it's not a race, it makes them quite tense.

You wouldn't do this to close friends, so if you do it to someone you perceive as subordinate, it indicates a personality that corners others.

In the case of a tour, where it's a cycling trip with somewhat familiar companions, cornering someone is akin to "bullying."

Since this isn't a very good personality trait, it would be best to keep some distance.

Both in terms of cycling distance and emotional distance—a double meaning.

Summary

Anonymity emerges when cycling, making it easy for one's true personality to show.

Depending on the person, they might become aggressive or drive carelessly, not slowing down at intersections.

With this understanding, let's strive for safe driving.

Cycling was also a mirror reflecting one's heart.

There's much to learn from cycling, and its profound depth is also part of its charm.
