Explanation of the differences between clincher, tubular, and tubeless-ready!

by Aman Batra 03 Sep 2019 0 Comments

Road bike tires come in various types, such as "clincher," "tubular," and "tubeless ready." Most people probably use "clincher" tires, but advanced riders or professionals often use tires other than clinchers in races. Regardless of the type of tire you choose, it's a good idea to understand how each one is constructed. This time, we will explain the different types of road bike tires in detail.

1. What are Clincher, Tubular, and Tubeless Ready Tires?

This article will focus on three types: "clincher," "tubular," and "tubeless ready." Let's understand how each one works.

・Clincher

Clincher is the most common type of tire. The tire's beads hook onto the inside of the rim to secure it, and air is inflated into a tube set inside. The tire and tube are separate components used together.

・Tubular

Tubular tires have a tube sewn into the outer casing of the tire. The tire is attached to the rim using rim tape or rim cement. Unlike clinchers, where the tire and tube are separate, tubular tires integrate the tire and tube.

・Tubeless Ready

Tubeless ready tires are a type that does not require an inner tube. Structurally, it's similar to a clincher without the tube; the tubeless-ready tire is mounted directly onto the rim. For tubeless ready tires, a sealant is injected inside the tire to maintain air pressure. When purchasing tires, confirm whether each product is clincher, tubular, or tubeless ready. Also, wheels are designed to be compatible with specific tire types.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each tire type?

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of clincher, tubular, and tubeless ready tires.

・Clincher

【Advantages】

・Easy to repair punctures (simply replace the tube, can handle roadside emergencies)

・Wide selection (plenty of options for both tires and wheels)

・Cost-effective (simple structure, affordable, good durability)

・Lightweight to carry (only need to bring a tube)

【Disadvantages】

・Prone to pinch flats

・Increased rolling resistance (friction between the tube and tire)

・Tubular

【Advantages】

・High performance (lightweight, no friction)

・Less prone to pinch flats

・In case of a puncture, it's a "slow flat" (air leaks slowly), so you can still ride a bit

【Disadvantages】

・Difficult to change tires

・Not cost-effective (expensive wheels, tires are likely to be disposable)

・Tubeless Ready

【Advantages】
