What you need to know about bicycle tire sizes

by nicole hu 27 Aug 2021 0 Comments
Tires are an important part that affects a bicycle's performance. Knowing your bike tire size will help you determine if the bike is right for you. Everyone discusses road bike and gravel grind tire sizes, but you'll find that a wider tire doesn't necessarily slow you down. So, which tires will fit your bike rims? Is my tire size okay? What do the various bike tire size specifications mean? And while there's a lot of size information written on the side of a tire, it can sometimes be difficult to understand. In this article, we'll explain content related to bike tire sizes to answer these questions.

Which size tire should I choose?

If you want a comfortable ride, the easiest choice is to select the largest tire that fits your bike rim and provides clearance from the frame or fork. Many manufacturers will tell you the maximum size that can be fitted. What width of bike tire will fit my rim? You need to consider your height and weight. The recent trend is for bike tire sizes to get progressively larger. You also need to find the right bike tire that fits your rim. What do the various bike tire size specifications mean? My bike tire size might be pulled. You can usually check the tire sidewall. The numbers there indicate the tire's size (approximate outer diameter and width). For example, 700 x 32c means the tire has an outer diameter of 700mm and a width of 32mm. Generally, bike tire measurements have two elements. The larger number is the tire diameter in inches, and the smaller number is the tire width in inches. Tire diameters typically range from 12 to 26 inches, and tire widths typically range from 1.75 to 2.215 inches. You should know that road bikes and mountain bikes use different units for their named sizes. Road bikes use C, and mountain bikes use inches.

What are the common sizes for bike tires?

Generally, standard road bike tire sizes are 700cx 23mm and 700x 25mm. These are standard road tire sizes. They indicate a tire diameter of approximately 700mm and a width of 23mm/25mm. There are also less common sizes now, such as 510C, 500c, and 450c. Common mountain bike tire sizes are 26.5er, 27.5er, and 29er. Currently, the most mainstream mountain bike sizes are 27.5er and 29er mountain bikes. 26.5er mountain bikes have been discontinued. Worn tires affect the riding experience and need to be replaced with new ones, but everyone knows that an ill-fitting tire can damage the rim and endanger the rider. If the tire width isn't sufficient, there's an increased risk of pinch flats and punctures. If it's too wide, tire burping and decreased stability can occur. Therefore, finding the appropriate bike tire size is essential.

Is there a cheat sheet for road bike tire sizing?

Yes. If you don't want to know anything more about tires, check out this quick guide to tires that fit your rim width.
The chart above shows the internal width of the rim and the corresponding tire sizes that fit that rim. You should avoid fitting tires in the red section. Fitting inappropriate tires can pose a risk to your ride. As you can see, rims accommodate a variety of tire sizes, and it's worth choosing a rim that suits your riding. Aero wheels, fast wheels, and light wheels have an internal width of 18.25, allowing for a wide range to fit modern tires.

Who standardized bicycle tire sizes?

Currently, this standard is mainly developed by two major international organizations: ISO and ETRTO. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) was established on February 23, 1947, as an international standard-setting organization to develop international standards for industry and commerce worldwide. ISO is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

What is ETRTO?

ETRTO is the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation, and it is a professional measurement of circumference. Many countries use size standards as specifications for bicycle size manufacturing to avoid confusion with various sizes.

Everyone knows that bike manufacturers love to create new standards. This idea was born at a time when the cycling industry was delivering new standards every week. Thankfully, we seem to be moving away from that. But how does this relate to ETRTO? At the time, each country had its own method of measuring tires. Some made more sense than others. All these standards proved to be a nightmare for consumers. To make everything easier, it was decided that an international standard guide for tire sizing was needed. The new method is named the "E.T.R.T.O." system, and you might still see it around. E.T.R.T.O stands for European Tire and Rim Technical Organisation. The system adopted is part of the ISO system, the International Organization for Standardization. The specific name given to the ETRTO standard is ISO5775. We should be grateful for this rule, which allows us not to encounter the complex situation where there used to be six different types of 26-inch tires.

What tire sizes fit ICAN FL series and AERO series wheels?

ICAN Aero series wheels and FL series wheels have the same wheel rim specifications. The only difference is that the Aero series construction uses Toray T700 and T800 carbon fiber. The FL series uses only Toray T700 in its construction. By blending carbon fiber, the Aero wheelset can be about 100g lighter than the fast and light series rims. For FL series and AERO series wheels, we recommend tire sizes from 25mm to 28mm.

Also, for many gravel riders, a 40mm tire size is sufficient. If you want to use a width greater than 40mm, you'll need to do some serious off-roading. A 29er XC wheel might be better.
