Road Bike Tubeless Tires Today

by nicole hu 20 Oct 2020 0 Comments

It was in this century that tubeless tires began to be introduced to bicycles.

Compared to cars and motorcycles, which had long since gone tubeless, this was a remarkably slow change.

Moreover, as you all know, tubeless technology has only become a reality in the last two years or so. (As of autumn 2020)

The reason for this cannot be expressed in a single word, but I hope that by the time you finish reading this article, you will have some understanding of the circumstances.

Basic knowledge of tubeless tires

ロードバイクホイール

There are three types of bicycle tires: tubular, clincher, and tubeless.

The fact that all three types are currently in use means that each has its advantages, but it also means that there is no all-mighty option.

However, if there is one type among these that could potentially be an all-mighty option, wouldn't it be tubeless?

The performance of clincher tires is quite good these days, but the performance is heavily influenced by the tube used inside. Thick tubes are strong against punctures and practical, but they also have high rolling resistance, which needs to be improved by making the tube thinner.

In other words, the ideal is an extremely thin tube, but a tubeless system without a tube perfectly embodies this "ideal."

This is where the advantage of tubeless tires lies.

Let's list the advantages again.

① Power is converted into propulsion without waste (due to low rolling resistance)

② Comfortable ride (due to more air capacity)

③ Strong against pinch flats (due to no inner tube)

If these many advantages can be obtained, then I believe tubeless is more advantageous even considering the disadvantages, and in fact, I think riders who have switched to tubeless feel exactly the same way.

So, what are these disadvantages?

① Requires a dedicated wheel

② Relatively difficult to attach/detach (difficult to match tire and wheel)

③ Puncture repair is not easy

④ Often requires sealant

⑤ Expensive

These disadvantages are expected to be resolved through product improvements, and some riders consider them to be no problem at all, but it is a fact that widespread adoption has not yet occurred.

About the use of sealant

ホイール

Most ICAN wheels can use both clincher and tubeless tires.

When using tubeless tires, we recommend using sealant.

Sealant is an excellent product that can seal punctures if they are minor, but there are also some potential disadvantages.

① Installation can be time-consuming

② Sticky sealant can be difficult to handle (during installation/removal, or in case of a puncture)

③ Adds a small amount of weight

④ Requires regular replenishment

⑤ Sealant costs money

Any brand of sealant can be used with ICAN wheels.

The stickiness of sealant can indeed be a hindrance.

While it's not a big problem if you are careful during installation and removal, it's worth knowing that in the event of a puncture, sealant can squirt out of the hole and get on your bike or clothing.

Tubeless tires compatible with ICAN wheels

ホイール

While there are no specific requirements, we recommend foldable tires for their ease of attachment and detachment. It goes without saying that they are also convenient for portability.

Regarding tire width, ICAN wheels recommend 25C to 28C, which is also the easiest size to install.

ICAN tubeless-ready wheels

Most ICAN wheels are compatible with both clincher and tubeless tires. This is usually only available on wheels of a certain grade or higher, so this can be said to be a hidden secret to the popularity of ICAN wheels.

Furthermore, dual compatibility also means you can try both clincher and tubeless. Gaining experience with both will enhance your cycling career and help you determine which type of tire suits you best.

ICAN Wheels

ICAN wheels are certified by the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale).

Furthermore, the fact that they come with a 2-year warranty shows their absolute confidence in their quality.

Summary

I hope you now have some understanding of the difficulties involved in making delicate bicycle rims and tires tubeless.

While tubeless technology still has room for evolution, wheels have matured considerably, and we are confident that you can use them with peace of mind.

Riders who have tried tubeless always respond with praise.

ICAN will back you up with our wheels to help you experience this new era of technology.
