Do Road Bike Frames Last a Long Time? [For Road Bike Beginners]

by nicole hu 08 Apr 2020 0 Comments

Hello, this is ICAN.

Are you wondering if your road bike frame is reaching the end of its life, or what happens when it does? Today, we'll answer those questions. This article will cover the lifespan of a road bike frame and ways to extend it. By reading this article, you'll understand how often you should consider replacing your frame.

Road Bike Frame Lifespan ①: Aluminum

Aluminum frames generally have a long lifespan, typically lasting around 5 to 10 years. However, if regular maintenance is neglected, cracks can appear in the frame in just a few years.

Because road bike frames made of aluminum are sturdy, it's easy to assume that regular maintenance isn't necessary. This often leads to cracks forming and the frame breaking within a few years. To make your aluminum road bike frame last longer, it's essential to regularly inspect it for paint lifting or cracks. Doing so should allow it to last for about 10 years.

Supplement to Aluminum Frames: Do cracks suddenly lead to breakage?

Yes, if cracks appear, there's a significant possibility of the frame suddenly breaking. However, if an aluminum frame breaks, it's highly likely that maintenance has been neglected.

I mentioned that aluminum frames can last about 10 years for those who perform regular maintenance. Conversely, if regular maintenance is not done, the frame could break in about 5 years. This means if your aluminum frame breaks in about 5 years, it indicates you haven't been performing regular maintenance. If you simply clean it lightly, you don't really need to worry about its lifespan.

Road Bike Frame Lifespan ②: Carbon

A22 Aero Carbon Frame

Carbon is said to have a shorter lifespan than aluminum, but for those who perform regular maintenance, it typically lasts a good 10 years.

However, the reason carbon frames are said to have a shorter lifespan than aluminum is likely due to carbon's inherently lower durability. This is because carbon is made by solidifying resin. It is considerably weaker against external impacts than aluminum. That being said, carbon is a material frequently used in airplanes (though for different applications than road bikes). Carbon is used in airplanes because it lasts longer than aluminum and is more cost-effective in the long run. Therefore, when using a road bike frame made of carbon, regular maintenance should prevent any major issues.

Supplement to Carbon Frames: Carbon is vulnerable to UV light

Recent advancements in resin protection technology mean that frames don't degrade easily. However, carbon is vulnerable to UV light, and prolonged exposure can lead to unexpected degradation. Therefore, when using a carbon frame, proper UV protection can prevent it from deteriorating faster than usual.

[Chromoly Frame] For those concerned about lifespan

For those concerned about lifespan, a frame made from Chromoly is recommended. Chromoly, made from a combination of iron and copper, has a longer frame lifespan than carbon, lasting for several decades. Aside from its weight, it's an ideal bicycle for road bike beginners.

Prone to rust because it uses iron

However, since Chromoly uses iron, the frame is prone to rust. It's best to avoid rain and areas near the sea as much as possible.

How to extend the lifespan of your road bike frame

If you want to extend the lifespan of your road bike frame, these tips will help. They include "preventing tire degradation," "protecting against rain and UV light," "wiping the frame," "being careful with bumps," and "stopping if you feel anything unusual." Let's look at them in detail.

① Protect from rain and UV light

No matter what material a frame is made of, it's vulnerable to rain and UV light. Therefore, it's a good idea to take measures like using a road bike cover. However, if the cover is on for a long time, the road bike can get very humid, so that's something to watch out for too.

② Wipe the frame

Even if your road bike frame isn't visibly dirty, it's good to wipe it frequently. This can help you detect invisible dirt or unusual spots early. Also, as I mentioned earlier, when the cover has been on for a long time, it's best to wipe away moisture with a towel. That moisture can damage the frame or rust screws.

③ Be careful with bumps

If you ride a road bike, it's a good idea to slow down and carefully navigate even small bumps. Most road bike frames are made of carbon, which is susceptible to external impacts. You should also consider the tires and be careful with bumps, as road bike tires are thin and prone to wear.

④ Stop if you feel anything unusual

If you feel anything unusual when going over a bump, stop riding and head to a bike shop. After some use, the frame might start making strange noises. To extend the lifespan of your road bike frame, it's best to avoid riding it forcefully if you suspect a problem.

 Recommended Carbon Frames (3 selections)

Finally, I'd like to introduce our carbon frames. Most of the frames I'm about to present use T800 or T700 carbon material. Using these materials allows us to keep the price under 100,000 yen and create very sturdy frames. Additionally, all frames come with a 2-year free warranty, which is useful if your frame gets damaged.

1. A22 Aero Carbon Frame

A22 Aero Carbon Frame

The A22 carbon frame is ICAN's latest road bike frame model.

Carbon frame performance is constantly evolving, and the A22 was completed by pouring all of ICAN's current technology into it.

Carbon material has a delicate side, where its characteristics change even by altering the order of stacked fibers, and this is precisely where a manufacturer's skill shines. Technical accumulation is indispensable for this, and ICAN's experience in continuously manufacturing carbon-specialized products comes into play here.

The concept of the A22 is "shape-up."

The aero frame, with its sharp and straight lines, ensures sufficient rigidity while successfully shedding unnecessary bulk.

Whether you want to build a stylish touring bike or incorporate carefully selected parts as a racing bike, the versatility of the ICAN A22 carbon frame is its hallmark.

2. Aero A9 Carbon Frame

Aero Carbon Frame

The Aero A9 carbon frame uses T800 and T700 carbon materials, which allowed us to reduce the weight more than other frames. The weight is an impressive 1,100 grams. This frame's main features are its thru-axle, large bottom bracket area, 1.5-inch head tube, and large chainstay. The chainstay, in particular, is a crucial part for transmitting pedaling power, and its larger size makes it easier to transfer power. Disc brakes are used on this model.

3. X-GRAVEL Carbon Frame

This frame is made by combining T800 and T700 carbon fibers from Toray, Japan, offering both lightness and sturdiness, making it comparable to high-end models. Reinforced with Toray T700 and T800 carbon fiber, it results in a very stiff frameset. This rigidity helps you gain speed as much as disc brakes help you slow down.

Summary: To extend your road bike frame's lifespan, regular maintenance is the only choice.

Thank you for reading this far. That concludes our discussion on road bike frame lifespans and an introduction to carbon frames. Regardless of whether a road bike uses aluminum, carbon, or chromoly, it is vulnerable to rain, UV light, and bumps. Therefore, it's good to regularly clean the frame and slow down when going over bumps.
