How often should I replace the chain?

by nicole hu 22 Aug 2020 0 Comments

Many cyclists probably have questions about chain lifespan and maintenance, so I've put together a simple Q&A to explain how to determine the life of your chain and how to maintain it. Let's take a look.

Q: How often should I replace my chain?

A: Let's use a Shimano 10/11-speed chain as an example. The manufacturer recommends replacing the chain every 2,000 to 3,000 km. However, if the chain is not significantly stretched even after exceeding this mileage, it is recommended to inspect it monthly with a chain checker. If it stretches beyond 0.5mm, replacement is necessary.

Q: If I don't want to change my chain this frequently, can I use it for up to 10,000 km?

A: Of course, you can. Chains aren't that fragile. However, continuing to use it beyond the recommended mileage can lead to accelerated wear on the freewheel and reduced shifting performance.

Replacing the chain every 2,000 to 3,000 km can also extend the life of the freehub body. While the original freehub body can typically last up to 10,000 km, if you use a single chain for 6,000 to 7,000 km before replacing it, the freehub body may become too worn. In such cases, even with a new chain, the freehub body might not properly engage, leading to chain skipping.

Q: How should I maintain my chain on a daily basis?

A: If you don't often ride in wet or muddy conditions, a dry chain lubricant is generally sufficient. Apply oil every 200-300 km, ensuring each link is lubricated, and remember to wipe off any excess oil after application.

If you frequently ride in rain or muddy conditions, a wet chain lubricant is recommended. Since wet chain lubricants can attract dirt and dust, it's advisable to lightly clean the chain before applying oil each time. This helps the chain lubricant penetrate effectively. The frequency of lubrication can be higher than with dry chain lubricants.

Q: Can I use WD-40 instead of chain oil?

A: WD-40 is a rust remover, and only 15% of its composition is lubricating mineral oil. It doesn't have other functions to aid lubrication, so it's not truly effective for a chain that operates for extended periods. However, WD-40 now offers bicycle-specific maintenance products, including chain oil. So, do not lubricate your chain with the rust-removing WD-40.
