"Impressions": ICAN wheelset changed my perception of carbon wheels.

by Aman Batra 22 Jun 2019 0 Comments

Here's a review from Mr. sakusalo, who purchased an Ican carbon fat bike. We hope it's helpful.

Ican Carbon Fat Bike

It's made of carbon, isn't it? The appearance is great, and it's nice to see the carbon fiber beneath the frame. I like it. What's the advantage of carbon fiber? In my opinion, it's the rolling ability. The weight decreased by about 800 grams compared to the Sun Ringle Mulefut 80sl wheels I used previously. That's about 1 kilogram. However, I don't think the trail speed has become much faster. I've been driven by all kinds of nature, and I've used two sizes of tires on these: Schwalbe Jumbo Jim Hebiskin 4.4" and, more recently, Schwalbe Jumbo Jim Skin 4.0".

The wheels with tires installed are about 2.5 kg for the front and 3 kg for the rear. There are some scratches on the wheels, but they don't bother me. They are made for a specific purpose, so let's hit the mountain trails again.

User Experience

Bearings, hubs, tires, and other components? How long do these last? They'll eventually wear out, but they hold up really well for enjoying the bike park. Fat bikes aren't really suited for racing in bike parks. But here, I broke the rear tire; it was the first time such an accident happened. You never know what can happen and where in the mountain biking world. I'm very satisfied with ICAN CYCLING's carbon fat rims, but they are very tricky to handle; as long as the spoke tension is correct, you don't need to true them.
After two people used it, my friend initially rode it for about 3000km, and now I've also ridden it for about 3000km. It has Halo hubs and "DT Swiss" competition spokes. After 3500km, the old Halo rear hub started to break from the freehub, so I had to replace it.

I replaced it with a Dt Swiss 3 Big Rider 50, and new Dt Swiss Competition spokes and brass nipples. Cheap rear hubs have big problems with durability. Never buy cheap ones! Even if they're not cheap, Halo rear hubs too! I recommend DT Swiss or Industry Nine rear hubs. The Halo front hub has had no problems even after 6000km.

The front hub doesn't bear as much load as the rear hub, so it's not as critical there.

Rider's Passion for MTB
I started mountain biking again 3 years ago, after about 10 years of taking a break. Initially, it was a White Bike hardtail with 27.5-inch tires, and the drivetrain was 3x10, but I changed it to 1x10. After a year with it, I sold it. A friend of mine has a rental company. I rented a fat bike there 2-3 times, and that was enough for me to want my own fat bike, so I bought my first one.

It was a Silverback Scoop Double 2017, which I used for almost a year, and then I bought a new model from the same manufacturer. The Silverback Scoop Double 2018, both with outstanding looks. The older one came with a 2x10 drivetrain from the factory, which I changed to 1x10. The new bike came with 2x11 from the factory, which I immediately changed to 1x11.

The front chainring is the same on both bikes, a black, narrow-wide oval with 32 teeth. The new rear cassette is a Shimano SLX 11-42, and the old one was a Sunrace cassette 11-40. Both bikes came from the factory with very good Shimano components, Mulefut 80sl's wheels, and Vee Tire Bulldozer tires, which I didn't like. Too heavy, too much self-steering.

Initially, I switched to Maxxis 4.8 inches. They're quite good in the snow, but generally quite heavy. Then in the spring, I bought Schwalbe Jumbo Jim 4.4. The first thing that stood out was the ease of rolling and absolutely no self-steering! With Ican carbon wheels, I also tried Minion FBF 4.0 on the front; the tires were okay but a bit too heavy.

Ultimately, I went with Schwalbe Jumbo Jim 4.0" on both wheels. Each one weighs about 1.1 kg. Eventually, I decided to buy slightly better brakes. Shimano SLX brake rotors and Shimano Deore M615 disc brakes are very easy to use and powerful. After one year of use, the brake pads wore out, so I had to replace them with new Shimano G01S pads. So far so good. Waiting for new roads and trips. Great!
