A thorough explanation of bicycle frame painting procedures and precautions

by nicole hu 27 Mar 2020 1 comment

Hello, this is ICAN.
If you want to paint your bicycle frame but don't know how to do it, we're here to answer your questions.
In this article, we'll look at the tools and steps required for painting a bicycle frame. However, if you make a mistake in how you paint, it can increase the time it takes and drastically increase the time needed for touch-ups. We'll also explain precautions to prevent that from happening, so please take a look.

Bicycle Frame Painting Procedure

Bicycle Frame Painting ICAN

"Preparation → Masking → Cleaning → Priming → Main Painting → Finishing." This is the procedure for painting a bicycle frame. We will explain each step in detail.

Preparation

For preparation, disassemble the bicycle and apply a cleaning solution. Applying a cleaning solution removes excess oil, and the paint will adhere better. Disassembling the bicycle also allows you to remove excess oil from areas you wouldn't normally pay attention to. Excess oil can cause the paint to peel off, so make sure to thoroughly remove it.

Masking Tape

Masking tape is used to block off areas that you don't want to paint. You can use newspaper as a substitute, but it's not recommended because the ink from the newspaper might transfer. Therefore, masking tape without ink is recommended. Masking tape is an essential item if you're painting a bicycle frame.

Remove Oil Again

Next, remove any oil that got on the frame when you applied the masking tape. Since you removed excess oil initially, it should be quicker this time. As mentioned earlier, even a little excess oil can lead to paint peeling later. So, take your time to remove the oil thoroughly.

Priming

Next, we want to apply the primer, but if you're indoors, first ventilate the area. However, priming depends on the bicycle you are currently using. That's because you only prime if you think the color will change when you apply the topcoat. By the way, silver spray paint is used for priming. Two cans should be plenty. Also, the trick to painting a bicycle frame is to apply it "thinly and evenly." Apply 2-3 coats to prevent the paint from dripping.

Main Painting

Once the primer has dried sufficiently, it's time for the main painting. When painting a bicycle frame, just like with the primer, remember to apply it "thinly and evenly." It's also a good idea to apply 2-3 coats to prevent the paint from dripping. After the first coat, let it sit for 2-3 days. Then, paint the frame again. Do this a total of three times.
If you take your time and paint the bicycle frame slowly, you might actually finish faster. You'll need at least three cans of spray paint.

Finishing

Finally, finish with waterproof sandpaper. Whether you do this or not will change how long the paint lasts. Also, if there's any rust, you can remove it with waterproof sandpaper. Since you went to the trouble of painting the frame yourself, you want to keep the color looking nice, right? Then waterproof sandpaper is your answer.

Precautions when Painting a Bicycle Frame

Carbon Wheels ICAN

When painting a bicycle frame, the precautions are to be patient, remove excess oil, and constantly keep the spray moving. I will explain in detail.

Keep the spray moving constantly

If you concentrate on one spot, the paint may drip or become uneven.

Remove excess oil

If you want to paint the frame beautifully and neatly, it is very important to thoroughly remove excess oil. If there is oil, the paint will easily come off, and fading will be severe. Even if you think you're doing too much, it's probably just enough.

Be patient

And it's also important to wait 2-3 days after the first coat. This is because otherwise, it will be uneven. Also, when painting yourself, the space you have to keep the bicycle is key, isn't it? If it rains outdoors, it could lead to the worst-case scenario.

Reasons for Painting a Bicycle Frame

For those who frequently ride bicycles, frame scratches are unavoidable. And as a cyclist, you don't want to show those scratches to others, right? To ride stylishly. That's why painting the frame is done to hide such scratches. Furthermore, if you paint the bicycle frame properly, it will lead to waterproofing, anti-fouling, and rust prevention. It's not just about improving the appearance. When you notice "my bicycle has started to get some scratches," it might be a good time to consider painting the frame.
