What are baton wheels?

by nicole hu 03 Nov 2020 0 Comments

Cyclists are usually interested in various bike parts, but isn't it true that trispoke wheels are surprisingly out of their sight?

We at ICAN also have a lineup of trispoke wheels, so let's consider which bikes they suit best.

Structure and Definition of Trispoke Wheels

A trispoke wheel generally refers to a wheel composed of a small number of thick structural elements (2-5) resembling a relay baton, rather than conventional spokes.

While there are no strict definitions for the material, manufacturing method, or structure, they are typically made of carbon and integrally molded with the rim.

The Position of Trispoke Wheels

The appearance of trispoke wheels is, above all, striking, but on what kind of bikes are they installed?

You probably don't see trispoke wheels on road bikes very often, largely because they are sometimes prohibited in road races.

In contrast, they are quite common and look good on fixed-gear bikes for urban riding.

Also, trispoke wheels on mini-velos often look natural and cool, exuding a "something different" vibe that catches the eye.

ICAN offers a wide range of trispoke wheels from 14 to 24 inches, and they have quietly gained attention among enthusiasts.

We also offer trispoke wheels for track bikes and fat bikes.

The Reality of Trispoke Wheels

Let's consider why trispoke wheels came into existence.

① It was a natural challenge to seek alternatives to spoked wheels.

② They were advantageous for reducing air resistance (fewer spokes could be used).

③ It was believed that they offered greater design possibilities.

④ There was an expectation of potential weight reduction.

These are likely the main reasons. Now, let's list the actual advantages and disadvantages of trispoke wheels.

Advantages

① Less air resistance

② Greater design freedom

③ Unique and pleasant wind noise

Disadvantages

① Most are made of carbon and are expensive.

② Many have an aero shape and are susceptible to crosswinds.

③ Impact can cause cracks.

④ Runout cannot be adjusted.

⑤ Surprisingly heavy.

Regarding price and weight, the following data is provided:

Upon examining 15 models of 700C trispoke wheels available in Japan:

The price for a set of two averaged 320,000 yen, which was relatively expensive even considering they are made of carbon.

The weight for a set of two averaged 1810g, which is clearly heavy when compared to carbon spoke wheels, which are typically around 1300g to 1500g.

In other words, unfortunately, there is no advantage in terms of weight reduction, but the situation is somewhat different for trispoke wheels for mini-velos.

Mini-velo wheels are small and thus often perceived as lightweight, but their components are not significantly different from 700C wheels, so they are not as light as they appear.

Also, the variety of replacement wheels is limited, but ICAN is focusing on carbon trispoke wheels for mini-velos, and they are lightweight at 1400g for 20-inch wheels.
