Mountain bike wheels used to be simple; all you had to do was buy a 26-inch wheel, but now there is an abundance of options. One of the fastest-growing options is the ICAN 27.5 Plus Mountain Boost frame and new Boost wheels. What is Boost and why is Boost great?

Boost means changing the width of the fork hub from 100mm to 110mm and the rear end of the frame from 135/142 to 148. With a wider hub, the hub flanges can be placed further apart, allowing for stiffer and more robust wheels. This increased stiffness allows for more control over the bike. To put stiffness simply, a 29-inch wheel becomes as stiff as a 27.5-inch wheel, and a 27.5-inch wheel becomes as stiff as a 26-inch wheel.

Another great aspect of Boost is that the frame is wider to accommodate the new hub, providing more tire clearance. To maximize this additional hub width, all ICAN Boost wheelsets use 35mm wide rims. A 35mm internal width means you can fit tires up to 3 inches wide on the wheel. Imagine the traction you can get with a 3-inch wide mountain bike tire.

Our wheel rims use Toray T700 carbon fiber, are equipped with Novatec hubs, and are tubeless-ready. This provides weight savings compared to alloy rims with a 35mm internal width. This means you get all the fun without the weight penalty of a regular Boost wheel. Climbing hills will be enjoyable with our wheels, and on descents, our wheels will help keep the rubber side down.
